Internet Exchange Messaging Server
Migration / Migration Tools FAQ

Overview

The ever-decreasing gap between the corporate Intranets and the global Internet has opened the door to seamless electronic communications. With open, Internet-based standards, corporate users can now employ the richness of the Internet to communicate with other users within their company as well as customers, partners and suppliers worldwide. To seize this growing business opportunity, companies need to move from legacy messaging systems to systems that support various Internet standards, such as:

  • Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP)
  • Internet Message Access Protocol Version 4 (IMAP4)
  • Batch SMTP (BSMTP)
  • Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions (MIME)
  • Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP)
  • Post Office Protocol Version 3 (POP3)

Moving from legacy systems to open, Internet-based systems means migrating a variety of information, which includes the following:

  • Messages
  • Attachments
  • Folders and folder hierarchy
  • Distribution lists
  • Private address books
  • Archives and bulletin boards
  • Address book / directory

Questions and Answers

  1. Can I install Internet Exchange 4 on my Internet Exchange 3.12 server for testing, without harming the running (production) 3.12 server? I do not have test hardware to use for testing of the version 4 product.

  2. Do you have any idea how I can convert a 3.12 installation to 4.x. It is installed as a completely new install and I saw no way to convert the CCMail to internet addresses that I already have (<=400 names)?

  3. I replaced our Internet Exchange 3.14 with Internet Exchange Messaging Server (IEMS) 5. Do you have any idea on how I can convert our cc:Mail addresses into Internet-style email addresses simultaneously? We have about 400 users and I do not have the time to convert them one by one.

  4. Should I migrate each cc:Mail user to the LDAP directory before migrating them to the Message Store?

We are not recommending this kind of setup since Internet Exchange 4 requires high memory allocations. I'm not sure on how the 3.xx smtp process 'production' can counter-act on the Internet Exchange 4x test modules, though it will work, don't expect the throughput. The error you may receive during the test may be a 3xx server driven or vice versa.

After installing Internet Exchange 4.0, you will find the two files " ADDRBKCC.EXE and MIGRCC.EXE " located in the destination folder or use cc:Mail and Notes migration. These utilities will help you migrate smoothly from your previous cc:Mail gateway to a full Version 4.0 Open MTA. Make sure you've installed the cc:Mail connector. Also, read our cc:Mail connector Administration Manual.

IEMS has of the Address Book and Mailbox Converter migration tools. The directory converter in particular converts cc:Mail Addresses to Internet-style email addresses recognized by the IEMS Directory Server. Using the Directory converter, you can convert any or all email addresses in cc:Mail address book simultaneously. To run the cc:Mail Directory Converter, follow these steps:

    1. Go to IEMS 5 Start-up Programs Menu. Here place mouse pointer to the cc:Mail Converter option. This displays the sub-menu for cc:Mail.

    2. On cc:Mail's sub-menu, click the cc:Mail users migration icon to activate cc:Mail address book converter.

    3. On cc:Mail's welcome screen, click the Next button.

    4. On the checking screen, enter the required details for the Directory Server and Message Store. Afterwards, click Next.

    5. On the cc:Mail Post Office screen, enter the Main PO Name, direct path where the PO is located and the password to access the PO. You can also enter a value for the default Internet domain field. cc:Mail Address Converter will use information entered here to connect to the PO and convert cc:Mail Addresses to Internet-style addresses.

    6. Because you wish to convert all cc:Mail user addresses, click the Select All button. This will instruct the Address Book Converter to mark all addresses for conversion. Click Next button to proceed.

    7. On the Address Conversion screen. Select form the local part pull down menu. Select the separator. These are needed to create the Internet-style address. Click Next button.

  4. Should I migrate each cc:Mail user to the LDAP directory before migrating them to the Message Store?

Yes, you must migrate each user in the LDAP server first so that the Directory Server can create a unique ID with corresponding user-entry in the Directory Server and Local Message Store for the user.

During the migration process, the Address Book converter creates two connectors (cc:Mail and Local) in the LDAP directory. If you will not be using cc:Mail anymore, remove the entry (cc:Mail) connectors in the LDAP then, set the default delivery channel to Local. To set the default delivery channel to Local, do these steps:

    1. Go to the Preprocessor web interface.

    2. Click Configuration button to display Configuration window.

    3. Under the default local delivery channel set it to Local.
