Internet Exchange for cc:Mail Versions 2.x - 16-bit VIM 6 And DB8 Support

NOTE: The technical note that follows is based upon observations that were made with the initial release of VIM Version 6 (Version 6.0 of the DLL's). The subsequent release of Version 6.02 of the VIM DLL's did not exhibit the same behavour. It is strongly recommended that if you are running VIM Version 6.0 that you upgrade to the latest version of these DLL's.

We have performed tests with cc:Mail version 6 and the DB8 post office, and our findings to date are the same as what other testers have reported - that Internet Exchange does indeed work with R6/DB8, however the new VIM libraries appear to be slower than before, causing a slowdown in gateway speed. Moreover, we have recently found two problems in the version 6 of the VIM library:

  • Any attempt to enter a message with an Applesingle file attachment causes a GPF. This is clearly a bug in VIM, probably gone unnoticed so far because most Windows applications never need to attach Applesingle files. At the moment, the only workaround is selecting "Force Native" in "Configure Options", in the "Inbound attachment option" pane. Unfortunately, that will affect Macintosh users running applications unable to handle files with empty " Type/Creator" fields, like Excel 4.

Moreover, if you are currently using or plan to use VIM 6/DB8, please do the following:

  1. understand that VIM 6.0 does not handle AppleSingle streams and so must set the global "Force Native" option,
  2. install the VIM DLLs located in <cd-rom>:\support\vdlwin.zip in the server install directory (usually <drive>:\lotus\ccmail) and place this directory in the system PATH, and
  3. remove ALL VIM DLLs from the local drive/system, unless ccmail is installed locally.
If you encounter an inability to contact the cc:Mail database after installing the VIM 6.0 DLLs as evidenced by "???" being presented in the cc:Mail PO queue, use the cc:Mail "admin" utility to change the password associated with the "Internet PO" to be that of the cc:Mail administrator account. This should correct the problem.
